The Ministry of Communications, Digital Technologies, and Innovations has issued a directive for the immediate closure of Gumah FM, a radio station operating in Bawku.
This follows an intelligence report that associates its broadcasting activities with violence and aggravation of conflict in the area.
This decision was made during an emergency meeting of the Upper East REGSEC conducted on February 11, where security agencies analyzed and discussed the situation in Bawku and other areas in the Northeast Region.
Gumah FM
According to a statement from the Ministry of Interior, intelligence gathered by REGSEC indicates that Gumah FM has been used as a platform to disrupt public order and fuel unrest.
Consequently, the National Communications Authority (NCA) was obliged to cancel the station’s broadcast license, declaring that they had reasonable suspicion that Gumah FM had ceased to abide by the code of standards and regulations thus failing to foster the democratic and impartial spirit expected of the media.
“No media house can be used as a vessel to incite violence or jeopardize the tranquillity of any community. This measure must be taken to avert further destabilization of the situation in Bawku, under the NCA issuance,” the statement said.
The order requires Gumah FM to stop operating without any delay, with the caution that any other medium used would be dealt with accordingly.
