While the world has long looked to Ghana for the finest cocoa beans, a new narrative is being written under the dynamic leadership of COCOBOD’s Chief Executive, Dr. Ransford Abbey.

This week, that vision was on full display as Dr. Abbey led a high-powered delegation, including the Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, Benin, and Togo, H.E. Simone Giger, to the KOA Impact facility in Achiase.

The visit was more than a tour; it was a testament to a CEO whose tenure is increasingly defined by a relentless drive for innovation, industrialization, and the economic liberation of the Ghanaian farmer.

The ‘Revolutionary’ Value-Addition

Under Dr. Abbey’s strategic guidance, COCOBOD is moving aggressively beyond the export of raw beans. The focus at Achiase was the revolutionary extraction of “cocoa sweatings”, a nutrient-rich liquid byproduct once discarded during fermentation, now being transformed into premium cocoa juice.

Industry observers note that this pivot is a direct result of Dr. Abbey’s “farmer-first” philosophy. By capturing value from parts of the cocoa pod previously considered waste, the CEO is effectively creating a new economy within the existing sector.

“Dr. Abbey is not just managing the cocoa industry; he is re-imagining it,” noted a senior management official during the tour. “His ability to bridge the gap between local farming traditionalism and international industrial standards is exactly what Ghana needs to dominate the global value chain.”

Leadership Through Strategic Partnership

The presence of H.E. Simone Giger underscored the international confidence Dr. Abbey has cultivated. The Swiss Ambassador’s commendation of the facility as a “pioneer in sustainable processing” highlights the success of Dr. Abbey’s mission to attract high-quality Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

Reflecting on the scale of his vision, Dr. Ransford Abbey shared his resolve to ensure that no farmer is left behind in this industrial revolution:

“This initiative is a game-changer for our farmers. It raises awareness of the full cocoa value chain and ensures that the sweat of the farmer translates into tangible wealth,” Dr. Abbey stated. “Scaling this across all cocoa-growing regions is my priority. Innovation must not be a luxury; it must be a standard that reaches every corner of our country.”

Scaling the Abbey Vision

The CEO’s roadmap is clear: replicate the Achiase success story across all seven cocoa-growing regions in Ghana. By integrating green technology and solar-powered processing, Dr. Abbey is positioning Ghana not just as a producer but as a global hub for sustainable food science.

Under his leadership, the narrative is shifting from “raw exports” to “total utilization.” As the Swiss delegation departed, the sentiment was unanimous: With Dr. Ransford Abbey at the helm, the Ghana Cocoa Board is no longer just protecting a legacy—it is building a future where every drop of cocoa sweat adds a drop of prosperity to the Ghanaian economy.

The Pinnacle of the Tour

The primary objective of the tour was to assess the technical and economic viability of this value-added process. By capturing cocoa sweatings before fermentation, KOA Impact has created a secondary revenue stream that does not interfere with traditional bean quality, effectively turning potential waste into a high-demand commodity.

During the visit, Dr. Abbey and H.E. Simone Giger engaged in strategic discussions regarding:

Expansion: scaling the initiative to other cocoa-growing regions and increasing the range of value-added products from cocoa beyond the beans, as well as attracting more foreign direct investments in value addition in the cocoa sector.

Economic Impact: Providing farmers with immediate, additional income streams alongside their bean sales.

Sustainability: Strengthening the bilateral partnership between Ghana and Switzerland through green technology and sustainable food processing.
