The Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) has suspended the industrial action embarked upon by its members following what it described as fruitful engagements with key stakeholders aimed at resolving the issues that triggered the strike.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 9, KADA announced that the suspension took effect at 6:00 p.m., allowing doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to resume their duties while discussions continue.

According to the association, the decision was influenced by the timely intervention of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as well as the efforts of the hospital’s Board, Management, and other stakeholders who have demonstrated commitment to addressing the concerns raised by the doctors.

KADA noted that while it remains resolute in ensuring that all outstanding issues are fully addressed, it had carefully considered the potential impact of a prolonged strike on patient care and public health.

“The safety and well-being of patients and the broader public interest remain central to our responsibilities, and these have informed our decision to suspend the action and continue the dialogue,” the statement said.

The association expressed profound gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Hospital Board, Management, and all stakeholders whose efforts helped facilitate dialogue and create a pathway towards an amicable resolution of the impasse.

KADA also acknowledged the support of the National Executive Council and membership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), describing their intervention as instrumental throughout the dispute.

The association extended appreciation to several professional bodies and unions within the health sector, including the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Emergency Medicine Society of Ghana (EmSOG), Orthopaedic Association of Ghana (OAG), Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU), Komfo Anokye Certified Registered Anaesthetist Association (KACRA), Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS-KATH Chapter), and the Komfo Anokye Pharmacists Association (KAPA) for their solidarity during the industrial action.

KADA also thanked doctors and other health professionals across the country for their support.

The suspension of the strike is expected to bring relief to patients and families who had been affected by disruptions in healthcare services at one of Ghana’s leading referral hospitals.

The association, however, indicated that it will continue to engage relevant authorities to ensure that the concerns that led to the industrial action are comprehensively addressed.
